Chapter 03 / Authenticity & sterility

# The source and the handling each need an answer.

Ask where the product came from and how it's handled. Finding out who will give the injection is another part of that conversation. Keep all three answers together.

Guidance read October 2026 · FDA & CDC

## Ask where the product came from.

FDA's [counterfeit botulinum toxin alert](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-alerts-and-statements/counterfeit-version-botox-found-multiple-states) concerns wrinkle-relaxing injections. It described incidents involving both licensed and unlicensed injectors. The products appeared to come from unlicensed sources. Checking a license doesn't finish the product check.

For these injections, FDA says to confirm that the product comes from an authorized source and the professional is licensed and trained. Ask for the exact product name and how its source was checked.

### A question you can use

“What product will you use, and how do you know it came from an authorized source?”

Write the answer beside the injector's name. If you hear only “it's the real thing,” ask for the detail that's missing.

## Appearances cannot show the whole process.

A tidy room doesn't tell you where a product came from or how it was handled earlier. Ask about those steps directly. Keep the question specific enough to get a useful answer.

You don't need clinical training to ask what happens to used equipment. If an explanation is hard to follow, ask the provider to put it in everyday words.

## Used means used.

CDC says [needles and syringes must not be shared between people](https://www.cdc.gov/injection-safety/about/index.html). They are discarded after use. A new needle doesn't make a used syringe safe for someone else. Unsafe reuse can spread hepatitis and other infections.

### Single-dose container

This is for one person, for one procedure or injection. Ask how the provider keeps to that limit.

### Multi-dose container

Each entry needs a fresh needle and syringe. Ask how the provider prevents contamination when using the container.

Ask the person responsible for your care to explain the handling. Keep unanswered questions in your notes, alongside the questions about the product's source. For example, “What happens to the equipment after my injection?” keeps the focus on the process. Ask for a clear answer about handling.

## Get medical help for symptoms.

After a botulinum toxin injection, symptoms such as double vision, trouble swallowing, shortness of breath or weakness need medical attention. FDA directs people with these symptoms to [a health professional or emergency room](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-alerts-and-statements/counterfeit-version-botox-found-multiple-states). Don't wait for a complaint to be answered.
